Some tweaks are necessary to make the keyboard lights work correctly in Dell laptops. This post will show you how to do that without doing any damage to your laptop. It is easy and only takes a few minutes.

In some models, the Keyboard backlight for Press-to-type keys is automatically turned on when you press a key, but in other models it does not happen this way. If your model has this feature, then there’s nothing else that needs be done. If you don’t see this feature and you want it, here’s how to do that:

Open the BIOS by pressing the F2 key in
Dell laptops. Navigate to the Power Management options using F10 and then
Scroll down to Keyboard backlight and press Enter.

Select “ON” option for all 4 backlight levels (Off, Low, Medium and High) and press Enter again. Open the BIOS again by clicking on F2 key. Save your changes and exit the BIOS.

This is a way to make all your keyboard lights steady and not flashing. To do this, you need to replace the original keyboard driver with a modified one from sourceforge:

1. Download the .ZIP package from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dell-laptop/files/Drivers%20and%20Utilities/DRIVER_SOLUTION_KBD_LIGHTING_v2.0/LGPL%20*fixed*%202.0/, Unzip it and copy it to the root folder of your harddrive.

Working directory for driver installation in Windows 7: C:\Users\Public\Documents\Dell.Notebook\Drivers
2. Right-click on “LGPL” file and choose “Extract All” from the menu.

3. Paste the extracted files in C:\Users\Public\Documents\Dell.Notebook\Drivers folder (making sure you have enough space).

4. Open your Dell laptop using a different BIOS, which does support touchpad backlight functionality. Press F2, navigate to Power Management option using F10, go to Keyboard lights section through F9 and select whichever solution you want in each of 4 colors: Off or Off/Dim or Low/Dim or Medium/Dim or High/Dim.

5. Save all changes and exit BIOS (F10). Close the laptop and press F2 again to get back to your regular BIOS, which we installed the modified driver software in.
6. Go to advanced options (using F8) and then drivers tab (using F10, it’s on the top of screen). Search for dell_kb_backlight driver with arrow keys until you find the file that should look something like this one: C:\Users\Public\Documents\Dell.Notebook\Drivers\dell_kb_backlight.sys.

7. Mark it with * and press Enter.
8. Delete the original driver from C:\Users\Public\Documents\Dell.Notebook\Drivers folder and reboot your laptop.

9. Close the laptop before you start using it for the first time after installing the modified driver software, because it takes some time to load everything on initial boot up. You’ll know when it’s done loading by looking at the bottom right corner of your screen: If everything is green, then your keyboard lights are working perfectly fine.

10. You can check if your custom driver has been loaded successfully by going to Device Manager in Windows 7, choosing Keyboards and looking for dell_kb_backlight driver. It should be listed with a yellow sign mark, which means that it is “Working properly”.

11. You can change the color of keyboard
lights to whatever you want inside Device Manager: Just right-click on
dell_kb_backlight device and choose Properties window from the menu list.
